Client Overview
The Rowan Street Overpass Pedestrian Bridge is a key pedestrian and cycling connection within Wangaratta’s transport network. As community use increased, the existing 2.5-metre-wide bridge no longer provided sufficient width or accessibility for the range of users travelling between both sides of the railway corridor.
The Rural City of Wangaratta commissioned the replacement of the existing structure with a wider bridge to improve accessibility, accommodate growing pedestrian and cyclist movements, and provide a safer crossing for users including mobility scooters and other mobility aids. The project was funded by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) as part of broader accessibility improvements.
Struktis was engaged to design, engineer, fabricate and install the replacement pedestrian bridge, delivering a modern structure designed for long-term performance with minimal disruption to surrounding traffic and businesses.

Engineering Solution
Struktis designed, fabricated and installed a purpose-built 3-metre-wide pedestrian bridge to replace the existing 2.5-metre-wide crossing, significantly improving accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, mobility scooters and other mobility aid users.
The bridge was engineered to comply with AS 5100 bridge design requirements and designed for a 5kPa pedestrian loading capacity, providing a durable, long-term solution for this important community crossing.
Given the bridge spans an active rail corridor, installation required detailed planning and coordination with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). The existing bridge was removed and the new structure installed during a carefully planned rail possession, allowing lifting operations to be completed safely between scheduled train movements while minimising disruption to both road and rail traffic. Off-site fabrication further reduced installation time and enabled the bridge to be commissioned efficiently.

Project Outcomes
The completed Rowan Street Overpass Pedestrian Bridge provides a wider, safer and more accessible crossing for the Wangaratta community.
The new bridge accommodates increasing pedestrian and cyclist traffic while allowing comfortable two-way movement for users with bicycles, mobility scooters and other mobility aids. Designed for durability and low maintenance, the structure improves connectivity across the railway corridor and demonstrates Struktis’ expertise in delivering pedestrian bridge infrastructure that balances engineering performance, accessibility and constructability.
