Project Overview
The Cabonne Shire Council engaged Struktis to design and construct a pedestrian suspension bridge in Canowindra, NSW. The Coocumber Bridge project provides enhanced access and safety for the local community.

Collaborators & Context
• Collaborators: Internal Engineering Team, Bekker Engineering (screw pile foundation design)
• Cultural/Environmental Context: No cultural or environmental approvals were required.
• Community Importance: The new bridge reconnects a popular local path, improving access and safety.

The Problem
The original timber bridge was damaged during the 2023 floods and had become unsafe for community use. In addition to replacing the failed structure, the site presented significant geotechnical challenges — including a high water table, silty ground, and poor surface stability. Standard shallow foundations were not suitable, requiring an innovative engineering approach.

The Solution
Wallmark delivered a fully prefabricated suspension-style pedestrian bridge, designed for long-term durability and low maintenance. To overcome the site’s difficult ground conditions, deep screw pile foundations were engineered in partnership with Bekker Engineering, extending to the underlying rock layer to ensure long-term stability. The bridge was fabricated off-site and installed quickly using a mobile crane, reducing disruption. FRP minimesh decking provided a non-slip, drainable surface for improved pedestrian safety, while galvanised and painted steel ensured structural resilience and aesthetic quality. Accessibility was built into the design through graded ramps and compliant handrails.

Outcome
The completed structure provides safe, year-round access for pedestrians. Designed to withstand future flood events and provide decades of service, the bridge is a durable asset supporting community connectivity, accessibility, and recreational use.
